Defeating the Counterfeit: The Sacred Heart of Jesus vs. the Unholy Trinity in Modern Spiritual Warfare

By Patricia Altier

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354 – 430 AD) is a prolific ancient author with a surviving catalogue of 100 separate titles, roughly 300 letters, and 500 sermons. It is estimated nearly 5 million words survived. He is considered a foundational Doctor of the Catholic Church taking the title “Doctor of Grace” positing profound theology on divine grace and free will. He argues the fallen human nature requires divine grace to choose good and act righteously. Furthermore, he emphasizes that grace is given freely by God, not earned through human merit or effort.

St. Augustine refers to the “unholy trinity” or the spiritual battles between the flesh, the world, and the devil in many of his writings including: Commentary of 1 John 2:17; Sermon 21 on the New Testament; Confession Book X; The City of God; Sermons on the Psalms 61/62. In summation, the flesh is the internal weakness of human nature which includes lusts and desires. The world includes the external seduction of a materialistic society that resists God’s truth. The Devil is considered the instigator who uses the world and the flesh to tempt human pride and disobedience with the goal to have humans set themselves up as gods.

This “unholy trinity” can be thought of as a great power of slavery – the devil entices, the world offers temptation, and the flesh desires them. St. John of the Cross in his work The Precautions states, “The flesh is the most tenacious opponent, the devil is the hardest to understand, and the world functions as a persistent surrounding influence.”

As we navigate a world characterized by fleeting desires, internal weakness, and diabolical temptations, the soul requires a divine refuge, therefore, anchoring oneself in the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which serves as a powerful antidote against the world, the flesh, and the evil one, by offering infinite healing love that transforms our fickle hearts.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus devotion was revealed by Jesus to a Visitation nun, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, in the 17th century. Jesus appeared scourged to Margaret Mary to reveal God’s intense love for humanity and to seek reparation for coldness and ingratitude. In addition, Jesus wanted to show His heart as a burning furnace of love designed to offer mercy and refuge in a world that has forgotten His passion.

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in 2026 falls on Friday June 12th. This day is celebrated on the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost. This date is significant in 2026 because the United States bishops plan to consecrate the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on its 250th anniversary.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus delivers relief from the “unholy trinity”. Examining the five key symbols of this iconic image can unlock a spiritual manual for combating the flesh, the world and the devil. The symbols of the Sacred Heart of Jesus image include: The Heart; The Crown of Thorns; The Cross; The Flames; The Pierced Wound.

Structuring one’s prayer life to fight the “unholy trinity” using the five symbols of the Sacred Heart of Jesus image can be achieved through simple meditation and interior reflection.

- Your Heart is a burning furnace, symbolizing the divine love and the Holy Spirit – Meditation suggestion: Lord Jesus, your human heart is on fire for souls, let me see Jesus in all the people I meet daily, increase my charity to counteract the cold indifference, and hatred of this world.

- Your Crown of Thorns was worn humbly representing the woundedness You suffer when I sin and am full of ingratitude – Meditation suggestion: Lord Jesus, the crown of thorns punctures Your most precious head because of the pride that lives in my mind. Give me the necessary grace to maintain purity to make reparation for the sins of impurity and selfishness in my life and in the world.

- Your Cross set atop of Your Heart represents Your sacrifice for all souls to have access to eternal life – Meditation suggestion: Lord Jesus, how can I submit myself to God’s Will? By acknowledging You carried the Cross out of love, I desire to deny myself, to surrender my will to the Father to defeat the pride that comes from the temptations of the Devil.

- Your Flames represent the Light of the World – Your truth in the darkness. Meditation suggestion: Lord Jesus, I too want to conquer the darkness in my life and in the world. Provide my soul with the spiritual armor necessary to spread Your Gospel in this challenging world full of deceit and chaos that is spread by the enemy.

- Your Pierced Wound In Your Heart represents the ongoing suffering of Christ and His immense love for mankind – Meditation suggestion: Lord Jesus, when the Roman soldier (St. Longinus) Pierced Your Heart the Church was born. Your Blood and Water came forth signifying the sacraments of Eucharist and Baptism. This fountain of Divine Mercy, redemption, and grace helps to purify all mankind. I understand this wound can never heal, perhaps representing the concupiscence I suffer daily. Point the lance at my heart to help guide me to practice the sacraments, especially the sacrament of confession to inaugurate my soul from the despair and pride of this world.

In conclusion, devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus offers a powerful spiritual defense against the flesh, the world, and the devil. Augustine urges believers to “gaze at the wounds of Jesus as He hangs.” View these wounds as an act of love: “His Heart is made bare open, as it were, in love to you. His arms are extended so that He may embrace you.” Furthermore, Augustine highlights the realization that God’s power and glory are revealed through the brokenness of the crucifixion stating, “In my deepest wound I saw your glory.” The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a strong defense against the snares of the devil. It fosters humility and prayer, which are the two things the devil fears most. What are the three core aspects of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Devotion? Loving Jesus in return; focusing on His mercy; and practicing reparation especially for the neglect of the Holy Eucharist.
