Article 2: Walking with the Angels: A Trilogy for October
A Soul Who Pauses to Realize: You Were Never Alone

Figure 1 “A soul pauses, and the truth rises: the unseen companion has been there from the beginning.”
A soul who truly pauses to consider the reality of its guardian angel would feel a mixture of wonder, humility, and deep consolation. It would suddenly realize that it has never been alone — not for a single heartbeat. The thought that a mighty heavenly being has watched over every step, every sorrow, every temptation, every moment of confusion or fear would stir a profound sense of gratitude.A person might think:
“I have been accompanied all my life, even when I felt abandoned.”
“Someone has been fighting for me, protecting me, guiding me — even when I didn’t notice.”
“God loves me so personally that He assigned an angel to my soul alone.”
This realization awakens not only comfort, but holy seriousness. If an angel has guarded you since the moment you were formed in your mother’s womb — as Scripture says, “For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13) — then your life is not random. You were placed in this exact moment of history, with its trials, temptations, and spiritual battles, because God intends to sanctify you here, now, in this generation, and He has given you an angel precisely suited to help you fulfill your mission.
The Awakening of Desire: A Longing to Know Your Guardian Angel
Once a soul recognizes this truth, a longing begins to rise — a desire to know this angel better, to cooperate with him, to stop ignoring his presence.
A person might think:
“Why have I not spoken to him more?”
“Why have I tried to fight alone when God gave me a warrior?”
“I want to be ready for the day he greets me face to face.”
And then comes the gentlest thought of all:
“My angel has seen every tear, every sin, every repentance, every moment I tried to return to God — and he has loved me through it all.”
This is not sentimental. It is deeply theological. The Church teaches that your guardian angel beholds the face of God even as he watches over you. He sees your entire life in the light of eternity. When you finally cross the veil, he will greet you not as a stranger, but as a friend who has walked with you from the first instant of your existence.
That thought alone can move a soul to awe, repentance, and renewed devotion.
Three Saints Who Reveal Why a Relationship with Your Guardian Angel Is Essential
St. Padre Pio: The Chalice of Tears and the Heavenly Messenger (Feast Day: Sept. 23)

Figure 2 Author - Alessio Parente: “Send Me Your Guardian Angel” publisher TAN Books
Padre Pio taught that your tears are gathered by your guardian angel and placed in a golden chalice, to be presented before God as a sign of love and perseverance. Every tear shed in loneliness, grief, or repentance is tenderly noticed and kept safe. Your angel guards these tears because they reveal your endurance, your longing for holiness, and your trust in God through every trial.
How Padre Pio Described Guardian Angels
From Send Me Your Guardian Angel — written by Fr. Alessio Parente, C.P., one of Padre Pio’s closest assistants — we learn that Padre Pio often spoke in detail about the individuality and appearance of guardian angels. The book is a small but beloved collection of stories, testimonies, and eyewitness accounts gathered by Fr. Alessio, highlighting the miraculous deeds performed by guardian angels in Padre Pio’s life and in the lives of those who sought his help. Below is Padre Pio’s own account, as preserved in this book, describing what guardian angels look like.
The Appearance of Guardian Angels According to Padre Pio:
Some appear more active; others more reserved or timid.
Angels assigned to suffering souls wear red garments and small crowns.
Angels of innocent souls wear white garments, joyful expressions, and beautiful crowns.
Children have especially beautiful angels: light-blue garments decorated with pearls, crowned with roses.
Angels of sinners wear deep red garments, arms folded, faces lifted toward Heaven in imploring prayer.
Holy souls with special missions are accompanied by extraordinary angels who defend and guide them with exceptional strength.
This vivid imagery reveals a profound truth: your angel is uniquely suited to your soul, your temperament, your mission, and your cross. Although angels are pure spirits without physical bodies, Padre Pio taught that they sometimes appear with distinct colors and forms that reflect the spiritual state of the person they guard — a symbolic “color-coding” that expresses how a soul chooses to live on earth and the particular mission entrusted to its angel.
A Short Story of Angelic Intercession
One of the clearest accounts of Padre Pio’s angelic assistance is recorded by Fr. Alessio Parente:A man traveled a great distance to confess to Padre Pio, but the crowds were overwhelming. In desperation, he asked his guardian angel to go to Padre Pio and tell him of his need. When the man finally reached the confessional, Padre Pio said:
“Where have you been? Your angel has already told me everything.”
The man wept — not from shame, but from awe.
Key Points of Padre Pio’s Angelic Relationship:
He sent his angel on missions to carry messages to souls in need.
He encouraged others to do the same, saying he could feel their angels arrive.
He relied on his angel for protection during demonic attacks.
He received warnings and guidance through his angel.
He lived in constant awareness of his angel’s presence.
Padre Pio’s life shows that a guardian angel is a companion in suffering, ministry, and mercy. As he once said:
“Invoke your guardian angel, who will enlighten you and guide you. God has given him to you for this reason.”
St. Gemma Galgani: The Heavenly Friend Who Formed Her Soul (Feast Day: Apr. 11)

Figure 3 Author - Father Germanus: “The Life of St. Gemma Galgani” Publisher TAN Books
Gemma longed for holiness, yet she had a fiery temperament. After an episode of impatience, her angel appeared — not harshly, but with firm tenderness.
He said:
“Gemma, remember that the children of God must be humble.”
She burst into tears, moved not by fear but by the purity of his correction.
Her angel encouraged her, strengthened her, prayed with her, and guided her toward virtue. He acted as a spiritual director who desired her holiness even more than she did.
What St. Gemma Said About Her Angel’s Appearance
Although St. Gemma Galgani never described her guardian angel with the vivid visual detail found in Padre Pio’s writings, she did leave us a rich spiritual portrait of his presence. In her notebooks and letters, Gemma focused not on clothing or physical features, but on the angel’s expression, posture, and tenderness. She wrote of the seriousness in his face when correcting her, a seriousness that “pierced her soul,” and of the gentleness and sweetness in his voice when encouraging her toward virtue.
She often saw him kneeling beside her during prayer or standing near her with folded hands, radiating purity and peace. His presence, she said, was beautiful, luminous, and full of light, not in a physical sense but in the way it lifted her soul toward God. Gemma never mentioned garments, wings, crowns, or colors; instead, she emphasized his affection, his patience, and his constant companionship. Her most tender line — “Dear Angel, do not abandon me for a moment” — reveals how she perceived him: not as a figure to be visually described, but as a loving heavenly friend, a guide who shaped her interior life and remained close to her heart at every moment.
A Miraculous Story: Gemma’s Angel Runs an Errand
Gemma once needed to deliver an urgent letter to her spiritual director, but she was too ill to leave the house. The matter weighed heavily on her, and she feared the delay would cause trouble. As she prayed in distress, her guardian angel appeared and asked gently: “Gemma, why are you so worried?”
She explained the situation, and the angel responded with simplicity: “Give it to me.”
Gemma handed him the letter, and he disappeared. Later, when she next saw her spiritual director, he told her he had already received her message — delivered in a way he could not explain. Gemma smiled quietly, knowing her angel had completed the errand.
She wrote afterward that her angel performed such tasks “with joy,” especially when they served obedience or charity. For Gemma, this was not unusual; it was part of the living friendship she experienced with her heavenly companion.
Key Points of Gemma’s Angelic Relationship:
He corrected her lovingly, guiding her toward humility.
He encouraged her in weakness, strengthening her in discouragement.
He prayed with her and for her, lifting her soul into contemplation.
He helped her grow in virtue, shaping her interior life.
He treated her with tender friendship, comforting her in loneliness.
St. Gemma’s life shows that a guardian angel is not only a protector, but a gentle companion who shapes the soul with love, correction, and unwavering fidelity. She often said that her angel never left her side, guiding her toward humility, purity, and deeper union with God. In her own words, “Dear Angel, do not abandon me for a moment,” a simple plea that reveals her profound trust in the heavenly friend who accompanied her through suffering, prayer, and every step of her path to holiness.
St. John Bosco: Daily Companionship with Your Guardian Angel

Figure 4 With pen in hand, Don Bosco’s words carried a single radiant conviction - no soul walks unguarded.
St. John Bosco (1815–1888), founder of the Salesians, was an Italian priest known for his extraordinary love for young people, his prophetic dreams, and his deep devotion to the guardian angels. He believed angels were not distant symbols but real companions who guide, protect, and educate souls. Bosco frequently taught his boys to rely on their guardian angel in every circumstance, greeting his angel several times a day and celebrating the Feast of the Guardian Angels with great joy. His biographers note that he was “so convinced that his angel was ever at his side that one might say he saw him with his own eyes.” The following are daily practices he himself used and encouraged others to use in daily life.
Greet your guardian angel often throughout the day. Bosco prayed the Angel of God prayer multiple times daily, treating his angel as a present companion rather than a distant idea.
Live with conscious awareness of your angel’s presence. He told his boys: “Be ever more convinced that your guardian angel is really present and that he is ever at your side.” This awareness shapes how you speak, act, and choose.
Speak to your angel with simplicity and trust. Bosco encouraged ordinary conversation — asking for help with studies, purity, courage, and kindness, just as one would speak to a mentor.
Call on your angel in temptation, fear, or confusion. He taught that angels strengthen conscience and illuminate the mind, especially when one feels morally or emotionally overwhelmed.
Ask your angel to guide your decisions. Bosco believed angels inspire good thoughts; acting on those inspirations is how we cooperate with grace.
Entrust loved ones to their angels. He frequently placed his boys under their angels’ protection and urged others to do the same, especially parents.
Keep your heart joyful and pure. Bosco taught that angels dwell most comfortably in hearts that strive for goodness, forgiveness, and serenity.
The counsels of St. Padre Pio, St. Gemma Galgani, and St. John Bosco reveal a truth the saints lived daily: your guardian angel is not merely watching you — he is actively participating in your spiritual life. Having reflected on their wisdom and the daily practices they offer for living in companionship with your angel, this article now turns to Angels of the Lord: 365 Reflections on Our Heavenly Guardians, a treasured source of angelic stories in Catholic devotional literature. Before leaving you to ponder these truths in your own life, a selection of brief reflections and miraculous accounts drawn from this book is offered — stories meant to inspire, encourage, and deepen your awareness of the heavenly help that has accompanied you from the beginning.

Angels of the Lord: 365 Reflections on Our Heavenly Guardians (published by Catholic Book Publishing Corp.) is a beautifully curated devotional volume containing one reflection for every day of the year, each centered on the miraculous, protective, and consoling work of the angels. The book blends short stories from the lives of the saints, Scripture-based meditations, traditional Catholic teachings, and practical spiritual advice, making it a treasury of angelic wisdom for daily prayer. Readers often describe it as a “year-long journey into the hidden help of Heaven,” a book that reveals how intimately the angels accompany us in ordinary life. The following reflection is drawn from this collection.
Your Angel’s Notebook — Wisdom from St. John Vianney
Saint John Vianney, pastor of the tiny French village of Ars, was a very humble and holy priest. He struggled with the devil and was devoted to the angels. He understood the desires of the human soul. So many people came to him that he spent hours each day in the confessional. His spiritual guidance was always down to earth. Which words of advice would help you today?
Take great care never to do anything before having said Morning Prayers. The devil once declared that if he could have the first moment of the day, he was sure of all the rest.
If you find it impossible to pray, hide behind your good angel and charge him to pray in your stead.
The devil writes down our sins – our guardian angel all our merit. Labor that the guardian angel’s book may be full, and the devil’s empty.
Offer your temptations for the conversion of sinners. When the devil sees you doing this, he is beside himself with rage and flees, because then the temptation is turned against himself.
When you wake in the night, transport yourself quickly in spirit before the Tabernacle, saying, “Behold me, my God, I come to adore You, to praise, thank, and love You, and keep You company with all the angels.”
From An Entrance for Angels
We all do it: Why? we ask. Why is this happening to me? Why did this happen to me? Maybe we should be looking at it in a very different way. English writer Mary Cholmondeley (1858–1925) suggests that our sorrows allow us to live more fully.
“If you had not undergone an agonized awakening, all the great realities of life – love, hatred, temptation, enthusiasm – would have remained for you merely words to string on light conversation. But the sword that pierced your heart forced an entrance for angels, who had been knocking where there was no door – until then.”
Prayer: Can I allow heartbreak to become an entrance for angels? Help me, Lord, to admit your angels to sustain me throughout the great realities of my life and to show me the deeper reality of your providential love for me.
From Angels of Martyrs

Figure 6 Angels crowned the martyrs of Sebaste; a Roman soldier saw their glory and stepped into the ice beside them.
In 316, forty new Christians gave their lives for Christ. The martyrs were Roman soldiers in Sebaste, Armenia. Their conversions to Christianity had embarrassed Rome, and they were condemned to death. On a bitter cold night they were stripped naked and forced into a frozen lake. Onshore, a tub of warm water was set up to entice them to change their minds.
One soldier did weaken and hurried to the heated tub. A guard witnessing the agonies of the remaining soldiers then saw angels descending from the sky to bring them comfort and “crowns of martyrdom.” Instantly converted, he stripped off his clothing and joined the thirty-nine.
Thoughts to Ponder: Giving up one’s life for any reason takes courage. Angels must rush to strengthen those who give up their lives for the love of God or for the sake of others.
